The extension allows Amazon Prime Video subscribers to watch a program with several people and remotely. Watch Party can gather up to 100 viewers
The extension is currently only available in the United States.
The streaming platforms were particularly stressed during containment. However, the impossibility of meeting up with friends and family also prevented many people from continuing to watch streaming series and films. That's why Netflix had proposed an extension to alleviate the problem, Netflix Party. A few months later, it was Amazon's turn to offer such a solution with Watch Party.
The extension allows Amazon Prime Video subscribers to watch a program with several people and remotely. Watch Party can gather up to 100 viewers at the same time. Viewers can comment in real time on what's happening on their screen to simulate a real movie session with friends.
For subscribers only
Amazon Prime subscribers must start a "Watch Party" and invite friends to join them via a share link. Only the initiator of the watch party can manage the playback of the series, film or documentary and you must be an Amazon Prime subscriber to join a group session.
The feature is compatible with up to 100 pieces of content available on Amazon Prime Video. The original content on the platform can, of course, be viewed by several people thanks to Watch Party. However, movies that are only available for VOD purchase are not compatible with the extension.
For the moment, the extension is only available in the United States and only on PCs, but it is expected to be deployed in several countries in the coming weeks. A few months ago, Amazon had already integrated such a feature on its Twitch streaming platform. Streamers could stream movies and series from the streaming service to their channel via Watch Parties and watch them with their subscribers. The only requirement to participate was to have an Amazon Prime subscription.
