This is how to run Android applications on your Windows PC. A new feature allows you to pin your favorite mobile applications to your taskbar or start menu.
Like Apple's App Store, Microsoftis striving to provide a strong application portfolio for Windows 10. The library in the Microsoft Store is certainly more extensive with the applications we use most, such as Facebook, Netflix and Hulu, for example. However, there are some experiences such as Snapchat or TikTok that are only available on mobile devices.
Microsoft has found a solution to this problem by making the Android applications on your phone available on your Microsoft Windows PC via the Your Phone application. A new Android feature allows you to pin your favourite mobile applications to your taskbar or to your PC's Start menu for quick and easy access. Microsoft announced the start of testing of "Your Phone Apps" in its post published for the latest version of the Dev Channel Insider. Moreover, it seems that it is not limited to Dev Channel Insiders only.
When you launch an application, it works just like on your mobile phone and now opens in a separate window, outside of the Your Phone app, thanks to the latest Android "Apps" feature, - helping you stay productive. So whether you need to quickly answer a conversation, reply to your social messages or order food, you can do it quickly and efficiently using your PC's large screen, keyboard, mouse, pen and touch screen, in addition to your other PC applications.
Microsoft blog post announced:
"We're pleased to announce another exciting feature that continues our vision and promises to help you be more productive and keep you in the flow. Take advantage of the power of the Your Phone application with Link to Windows integration on select Samsung devices to instantly access your phone's mobile applications directly from your Windows 10 PC. There's no need to install, register or configure your applications on your PC, saving you time and hassle. You can easily link your favorite mobile applications to your taskbar or PC Start menu for quick and easy access,"
System requirements and interaction with the new "Your Phone Apps" feature
To install and use the new feature with Your Phone, your PC must be equipped with Windows Update May 10, 2019 or later. If not, you will need to update your system beforehand. The check is done in Settings > Updates & Security > Check for Update. Your Android device must have Android system version 9.0or higher with the "Link to Windows". The application is available on some Samsung devices, such as the Samsung Galaxy Note9, Note10, Note20, S9, S10, S20, Fold, XCover Pro, Z flip and many others.
Your Android device and PC must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network, and the PC must have version 1.20071.88 or higher of the Your Phone application. Earlier versions of the Your Phone application will display the previous experience of the phone screen on your PC. Download your version of the application to your PC and open it to connect. If this is the first time you are logged in, open the Notifications panel by scrolling down the screen, select the "Link to Windows" icon to activate the application.
Once you have entered your Microsoft account credentials and validate permissions, turn on your computer and follow the instructions to complete the pairing of the two devices. Open the Start Menu and go to Settings then Accounts. Log in with your Microsoft account.
You can use your PC's mouse, trackpad, keyboard, pen, or touch device to open, type, scroll, and interact with Android applications on your mobile device. For example, a single click is all touch interaction. Here are other possible manipulations with Your Phone Apps: right-clicking on your phone's screen displayed on the PC screen to go to the previous page; clicking and holding the left mouse button corresponds to a "tap/hold" touch interaction; clicking and holding and dragging to select content; scrolling the mouse to move from one page to another vertically or horizontally.
How to pin your favorite applications in Windows?
With Apps, you can pin your Android applications to the Windows Start menu, the taskbar, or add them to Your Phone application bookmarks. To pin an application on your PC, follow the steps below:
- Open the Your Phone application
- Accessing applications
- Right-click on the icon of the application you want to pin or bookmark.
Applications added to favorites from the mobile device are not installed on the PC. They will still run on the Android device. For this to work, your Android device must be turned on and connected to the same Wi-Fi network. The Your Phone application allows you to connect and mirror applications to your PC from your Android device.
In addition, you can only open one Android application at a time. The Your Phone app mirrors the screen of your Android device and the open application on it. If you open a new application, the one you've already opened will be replaced by the new application. According to Microsoft, Your Phone does not currently support multiple Android profiles or work accounts. Only applications from your default profile will display in the Your Phone application.
Known issues with Your Phone
If you see an error message indicating that your PC could not connect to your phone, there are a variety of reasons for this. For example, you should check whether your phone is connected to mobile data instead of Wi-Fi, ensure that your Wi-Fi switch is turned on, and ensure that the status under your current network is "connected". You also need to verify that your phone is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your PC. If you are behind a firewall or using a VPN, this might block communication between your devices. Be sure to turn them off to see if this solves the problem.
You should also make sure that your Android phone is turned on and that the Battery Save feature is turned off (the same check is valid for the PC). Also check that the phone is not in Airplane mode, and that you are connected to Link to Windows with the same Microsoft account as your PC.
Some applications may block the ability to switch to another screen. Some games and applications may not respond to interactions from a mouse or keyboard connected to your PC. You will need to use a touchscreen PC to interact with them. When you open an Android application via your phone, you will view and interact with the application on your PC, but all audio from the application will play on your Android device. The sound is not transmitted to your PC. If your Windows system and Android smartphone are compatible with Apps, you can download a required version of the Your Phone application and try it now.
