This is what a patent application filed by the social network suggests.
This is an information that should get a lot of people talking. Instagram would be considering charging a fee in exchange for adding links in a publication's caption. However, this would be a plus compared to the current situation where it is not possible to do this.
Mike Murphy, who has made a habit of finding information in the patents filed by the Tech giants, is behind for this news. In his article published on Protocol, he specifies that this trail is not new and dates back to 2016. Concretely, a pop-up window would appear when a user adds a URL in a caption. He would then be asked if he wants to pay 2 dollars to make his link active.
An option to take into account for influencers
As always in such cases, this information must be taken with tweezers. Indeed, the giants of the Tech file many patents and many of them are never used. It would make sense, however, to add functionality to the platform, while at the same time securing new revenue for Instagram.
If this new option were to emerge, it would be of primary interest to social network influencers. For now, those lucky enough to be verified, can already include URLs to stories. Many have also made a habit of adding links in their bios. It will also be necessary to plan a small additional budget if this feature is made available for a fee.
A detail for very large accounts but an element to be taken into account for the more modest ones, mainly with the increasing rise of the phenomenon of micro-influencers (between 10,000 and 50,000 subscribers) and nano-influencers (less than 10,000 subscribers). The latter are popular with brands that appreciate the close relationship they have created with their communities.
