The new mobile operating system, presented at the last WWDC, is released this Wednesday. The opportunity to discover the many innovations of this version.
It is now a habit for all iPhone owners. Every year, iOS is entitled to a series of interesting and welcome new features. Already available since a few months in beta version for developers and the curious, iOS 14 is officially launched today. It will accompany the new iPhone 12 which should be released in October, but you can also use it on older Apple smartphones, starting with the iPhone 6s released in 2015.
When the back of the iPhone becomes... a key
Among the contributions of this new version, the "Back Tap" marks the spirits. Thus, the back of the iPhone becomes a new touch. Concretely, it is thus possible to configure an action by going to the device settings. You can then tap the back of your phone to take a screenshot, launch the camera, or mute the sound. This feature is available on recent smartphones from the brand, such as the iPhone 11 Pro, the iPhone SE is not compatible.
Another major contribution of this version: a redesign of the home interface. You can now create widgets that allow you to view app content directly from the home screen without having to open it.
iOS 14 also features real application innovations that should delight users of the apple brand's smartphones. One example is CarKey, which allows you to open your car with an iPhone. For the occasion, the Cupertino-based firm has forged partnerships with some of the industry's leading brands such as BMW. In addition to this function, it is also possible to select relatives via the Messages application and authorize them to access the vehicle. Aware of the potential risk, Apple specifies that the system will work even if your batteries are empty.
App Clips: enjoy an application without installing it
A new feature is now available on iOS 14: "Translate". It is an alternative to its competitor and well installed Google Translation. However, it is a little more limited, since there are only eleven languages for the launch: English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Arabic and Chinese. Nevertheless, this tool has some convincing qualities. It can be accessed without a n internet connection, an option that can be very useful abroad when you have difficulty being understood or following what someone is saying.
Messages also has its share of new features. The App is quite strongly inspired by its Facebook competitors: WhatsApp and Messenger. As on the latter, you can reply to a specific person or mention several members of the conversation. The notification system has also been modified and it is possible to limit the scope of the notifications.
The Maps application, a competitor to Google Maps, has also been redesigned in a greener way. Cyclists are particularly spoiled since this version takes into account the bike paths best suited to their travel. Plans is also interesting for owners of electric vehicles and provides them with an estimate of the remaining range, along with a map of nearby chargers.
Finally, iOS 14 offers a new feature that should appeal to many users. App Clips, presented as an "application fragment", allows an action to be performed without installing an application. In other words, if you use an on-demand electric bike or scooter service, you no longer need to install a specific app. In fact, the "Sign with Apple" and "Apple Pay" functions come into play and allow you to perform the desired action without having to worry about a new application on your phone.
