Next generation consoles, new round: the match between PlayStation 5 (Sony) and Xbox Series X (Microsoft) will be played from November, with well thought-out positioning in terms of price, technical features, and exclusive games catalog.
With its new home console and its associated range of services, Microsoft hopes to take its revenge on Sony, which has sold twice as many PlayStation 4s as it has sold Xbox One since their respective launches in 2013. Comparison -between the two consoles "version 2020".
First to unveil its new home console in early September, Microsoft will also be the first to draw. The Xbox Series X will go on sale on November 10 and pre-orders will begin on September 22.
Sony, which made its announcement ten days later, said Wednesday that both versions of its PS5 will go on sale on November 12 in Australia, North America, New Zealand, South Korea, Japan and Mexico. In the rest of the world, the launch date is November 19.
Two versions to suit all budgets and new uses
Sony will offer a "premium" model that will cost $500, while a "digital" edition, intended for online hosted games, will be sold for $400.
Microsoft is making a similar bet with a "premium" version at the same price as its Japanese competitor, but is more aggressive on its "mini" version with a price at 300 dollars.
Sony, on the entry level, allows itself to have a price above Microsoft. It's the market leader, it can afford it. It would have been interesting for Microsoft to push the pricing strategy so as to be a little below the top end of the market.
On the design side, manufacturers have opted for two different approaches. With its large size, a light blue lighting and a white casing with V-shaped curves, the PS5 abandons the plain color of the old models to adopt a new futuristic look. The same goes for its controller, which has also seen its historical look greatly modified.
Xbox has remained more sober and classic with a black tower, stamped with a very discreet logo, and a controller faithful to the old generation.
"The fastest and most powerful XBox ever designed": on its website, the American brand does not hesitate to proclaim in large letters and numbers the technical characteristics of its future console.
With a graphics processor with a power of 12 teraflops, compared to 10.3 for the PS5, the X Series offers a computing capacity superior to its competitor.
Even if in other areas, notably in terms of memory and storage capacity, the two consoles are on an equal footing.
However, Is power really the issue?
The wider the base of players, the less power is a criterion. Kids don't care about power when they play Fortnite, what matters is the gaming experience".
In terms of exclusives, Sony has made a big impact by revealing a selection of top-notch titles that will accompany the launch of the PS5: the action game "Spider-Man: Miles Morales", and above all, "Final Fantasy XVI", the latest installment in this famous series, which will also be available on PCs from 2021.
In this match of exclusive catalogs, Xbox will offer only "Halo Infinite" as a major title.
Note that the compatibility of games from older consoles versions will be more limited for Sony than for Xbox. A priori, only PS4 games will run on PS5, while all games released on Xbox from the first console of the brand will be compatible with the new console.
