During the Huawei Developers Conference (HDC2020), the Chinese manufacturer announced HarmonyOS 2.0, its own operating system that will lead the construction of the company's ecosystem. In its mission to build systems free of technology and influence from U.S. companies, Huawei takes the first step towards independence.
The president of Huawei's software division, Dr. Wang Chenglu, said that the development of the company's operating system began in May 2016 already aimed at the possible directions the technology could take - and followed - in later years, resulting in the creation of a user-friendly operating system with the integration of a device ecosystem.
HarmonyOS treats all devices with it installed as modules. A computer is a CPU module, memory, display, speakers, disk drive and more; the system also distinguishes modules from IoT devices. In practice, the integration of all devices this technology allows integration into systems in a more agile way, without requiring significant customization in each device.
This would enable the operation of multiple systems together, simultaneously and discretely. In an example mentioned by Chenglu, "people like to sing at home, they could use their cell phones as microphones, the televisions as a media player and an app to choose the songs," as the GizChina website points out.
For developers, HarmonyOS has over 13000 APIs, development IDEs and Ark compilers to provide a robust and easily adaptable system, giving them unnecessary attention in building communication between devices.
HarmonyOS has been in open source for some months now, counting on the support of 120 partners and more than 100 thousand developers participated in its construction. Its mobile version will be available in beta for developers in December this year.
When releasing, next versions the company will count with the system and current models equipped with EMUI 11 will be entitled to upgrade their devices to the company's system. The current forecast for distribution to the public is for some time in 2021.
