In September, for the first time in Europe, more cars with electric drive were newly registered than pure diesel burners.
A historic point has been reached in the number of new passenger car registrations: In September, for the first time in Europe, more cars with electric drive were newly registered than pure diesel burners. This is the result of current data from market researcher JATO.
However, in the electric category, JATO counts purely battery electric and hybrid vehicles together. Together, these now account for around 25 percent of new registrations in September. Diesel passenger cars also accounted for around 25 percent, but were slightly behind electric cars. However, the largest share of new registrations is still accounted for by gasoline cars, at 47 percent.
For some time now, however, the share of combustion engines has been declining overall. Petrol engines still increased slightly until the middle of last year, but then the downward trend began. Diesel, on the other hand, has been losing market share for a good ten years now. Most recently, of course, it was the Corona crisis that caused the figures to collapse significantly. Only the electricity companies have seen a clear upward trend in recent months.
The EV has arrived on the market
The electric models have also completely arrived on the market. Although the VW Golf is still the leading product in the industry with 28,731 new registrations in September, both the hybrid version of the Toyota Corolla and the battery-powered Tesla Model 3 have more than 15,000 new registrations each and therefore have nothing to hide.
What the situation looks like in the individual countries is not exactly broken down in the statistics. However, there are probably still serious differences here, which result from the different framework conditions. Norway, for example, is known as the frontrunner and has set itself the goal of not having to register new combustion engines at all in a few years' time. In Germany, on the other hand, the powerful lobby of the car companies has slowed down the development massively for a long time due to the lack of own suitable products.
